Porters Perfection

Porters Perfection

Description:  Porters Perfection has become one of our favored European cider varieties.  It is a late season bittersharp, that has good disease resistance and unlike many of the European cider varieties we have found it to be a somewhat more annual bearer.  Although more trails are needed, we have reason to believe it may make a good single variety cider and certainly can be a prominent component of a small varietal blend.

Origin/Parentage:  Originated in the 19th century in the orchard of nurseryman Charles Porter at East Lambrook, England.  Fruit from the original tree was sent to the Long Ashton Station where its juice was judge to be remarkable.  It gained popularity in the 20th century and although not as prominent as it once was it is still commonly found in the Martock area of Somerset.  It is believed to be an offspring of Lambrook Pippin.

Growth Habit: Moderately vigorous, spreading and sometimes drooping, spur bearer.

Bloom/Pollination:  Mid-late season bloom.

Disease Resistance:  Appears to have good disease resistance, although resistance to specific diseases is not well documented.

Harvest: Late October to early November in Finger Lakes Region, NY

Uses: Cider

Cider Classification: Medium Bittersharp

Juice Quality:  Tannin: 0.25%, T.A.: 8.2 – 15 g/l, SG 1.054 – 1.066
